Amir Khan Announces Retirement from Boxing

Amir Khan has announced that he will be retiring from boxing after 27 years in the ring.

The British boxer is leaving an impressive legacy including winning a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics and becoming a unified world champion at welterweight.Khan was 17 years old when he competed in the 2004 Olympics however lost to Mario Kindelan in the lightweight final in Athens. Despite the loss, achieving a silver medal meant that he became the UK's youngest boxing medallist at the global competition.Khan made the announcement of his retirement on his Twitter account. He said:"It's time to hang up my gloves.

I feel blessed to have had such an amazing career that has spanned over 27 years.""I want to say a heartfelt thanks and to the incredible teams I have worked with and to my family, friends and fans for the love and support they have shown me."

Amir Khan won 34 fights and lost 6 over his 40-fight professional career.It was in 2009 when Khan became a world champion having defeated Andriy Kotelnik and securing the WBA super-lightweight title. He then went on to knockout Zab Judah two years later, winning the IBF belt and making him a unified champion.

When Amir Khan shared the ring with Kell Brook earlier this year, Khan was defeated by the Sheffield fighter and said that retirement was "something to think about, definitely" in the aftermath of the fight. He added: "I never want boxing to retire me, I want to retire from boxing."Although his time as a fighter is over, Khan's life in the public eye is may not done. The 35-year-old actually gained a new fan base outside of the world of sports after an appearance on reality show 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!' back in 2017.
