BAFTA TV 2021: 'Small Axe; 'I May Destroy You' Lead Nominations

In the midst of the pandemic, most of us have found ourselves binge-watching various TV shows to pass the time. The BAFTA awards are just around the corner, and the event will help to decide which of these TV shows are the best of the bunch.

On the BAFTA Twitter account, they had many on their toes waiting for the announcement!

Small Axe was one of the shows to have a particularly good showing, receiving an impressive 15 nominations. It focuses on those from a West Indian background, and what it was like for them living in London between 1960's and the 1980's.

The show was produced by Turbine Studios and Lammas Park in collaboration with BBC and Amazon Studios.

The success of 'Small Axe' has actually made history, and has set the record for the most nominations for a show in BAFTA history.

Another show that did particularly well was 'I May Destroy You', with 8 nominations. This is another BBC production - who are leading the way with 104 nominations across the board so far.

John Boyega - Leading Actor

John Boyega is up for nomination after his impressive performance in Small Axe, as well as fellow cast member Shaun Parkes.

Boyega said: "Beyond thrilled !!! Thank you for the nomination @bafta

"Congrats to @smallaxeseries for all the love you deserve"

Michaela Coel - Leading Actress

Michaela Coel was also able to pick up a nomination for leading actress after her performance in 'I May Destroy You', which she also directed.

"I am overwhelmed with joy to see so many people and teams that made I May Destroy You nominated this year," Coel said

"I am equally thrilled to see Small Axe, one of my favourite shows of last year, deservedly honoured, let the celebrations begin!"

Letita Wright, of Small Axe, was also nominated for Leading Actress.

Sir Steve Mcqueen - Best Director

Sir Steve directed 'Small Axe' and has recieved much praise for his work. He will now go against directors such as Michaela Coel, who is already up for nomination for her lead role in 'I May Destroy You'

Ncuti Gatwa - Male Performance in a Comedy Programme

The Scotland-Born actor also received a nomination for his performance in the popular show, 'Sex Education'.
