MIMII AND JOSH BECOME THE FIRST EVER BLACK COUPLE TO WIN LOVE ISLAND UK

Residents, Mimii Ngulube 24 and Josh Oyinsan 29, have made history after being crowned the first ever black couple to win Love Island UK.

The pair, who were not even an OG couple, shocked the nation after receiving a majority of the votes, beating out fan favourites Ciaran and Nicole, who finished in second place (despite previously being given a 71% chance of winning the show). The couple were up against  fellow finalists Nicole Samuel and Ciaran Davies, Matilda Draper and Sean Stone and Jessica Spencer and Ayo Odukoya.

Mental-health nurse Mimii had been coupled up with Josh since he arrived as a bombshell, after Ayo’s controversial recoupling in Casa Amor left her as the only single girl in the villa. Fans called for a knight in shining armour to rescue Mimii, who had undoubtedly become one of viewers favourite people in the villa. Then in came the Anti-Ayo, Josh, who showed what viewers believed to be a genuine affection for Mimii and as he admitted upon hearing the victorious results:

“I told [Mimii] when I met her, she surprised me, everything I expected her to be, she was and more. So I didn't need to make other connections.”

The pair both looked just as shocked as the other contestants when Maya Jama stunned audiences in a black leather dress with a jaw-dropping announcement. Jama announced that Josh and Mimii secured the majority of the public vote, bagging themselves a whopping £50k in prize money and the coveted top spot.

Upon hearing the news, a tear-filled Mimii told Maya: "I wasn't expecting this" and said that she felt "over stimulated, overwhelmed, grateful". Despite not being favourited to win series 11 of the show, Viewers hearts raced for Mimii and Josh's tear-jerking final declarations of love to one another when all the remaining couples shared emotional speeches during the finale. During Mimii speech she told Josh,  'you’re attentive, kind, gentle and loving. Thank you for showing me the qualities that I thought were unrealistic in this day and age'. The tear-jerking scene had fans racing to social media with the popular hashtag “#MimiiandJoshForTheWin”.

Though the results have come in and the contestants have returned home, the celebrations are far from over. Social media has been ripe with celebratory messages since the win, with many highlighting the momentousness of a black couple finally securing the shows top spot. One viewer captured the sentiment perfectly with the following statement:

“It was not fixed. So many white people voted for Mimi and Josh! You know what colourism and racism does exist and so this is a win for us all! It's not about them winning because they are black its the fact that the colour of their skin didn't get in the way of the best people winning!”
