Former footballer and television pundit Jermaine Jenas has separated from wife Ellie Penfold after 16 years together. The news comes just months after Jenas was dismissed from his roles at the BBC following allegations of inappropriate messaging. Ellie, a former model, took to Instagram earlier today to share the difficult news with the public.
In a heartfelt statement posted on her Instagram stories, she wrote: "I never imagined I would have to share something so personal with the public, but given the situation, I feel it's necessary. After 16 years together and four wonderful children, Jermaine and I have decided to part ways. We will remain friends and continue to co-parent. We kindly ask that you respect our children's privacy during this challenging time. Thank you, Ellie." The couple, who married in 2011, have spent over a decade together, building a family and navigating the challenges of public life.
The split follows months of turmoil for the former England midfielder, who was fired from his role as a pundit on Match of the Day and co-host of The One Show. The dismissal came after allegations surfaced that Jenas had sent unsolicited inappropriate messages to young female colleagues. Following the scandal, Jenas expressed deep remorse. Speaking to The Sun, he stated: “I am ashamed, and I am deeply sorry.” He maintained that he had done nothing illegal but acknowledged that his actions may have made others "uncomfortable."
It was previously reported that that Ellie had asked Jenas to leave their shared bedroom at their £1 million Hertfordshire home. The ex-footballer admitted to lying to his wife during a family holiday, sneaking off to take a Zoom call with BBC executives about the allegations. Jenas and Ellie had reportedly been facing marital difficulties for some time. In 2023, tensions escalated when Jenas allegedly began spending more time socialising with his colleagues from The One Show. The couple engaged in intense arguments but sought to mend their relationship through couples therapy. Despite their efforts, their marriage ultimately came to an end.
After a six-month break from public life, Jenas recently made a return to broadcasting, appearing on talkSPORT. He emphasised his commitment to self-improvement, stating that he was “coming back as a better person” after reflecting on his actions during his time away. His initial return to football coverage occurred in October when he worked on an overseas broadcast of Arsenal vs. Liverpool, though it was not aired in the UK. Jenas and Ellie share three children: daughters Geneva and Olivia, and son Jacob. Additionally, Jenas has an older daughter, Sancha, from a previous relationship, who resides in the United States with her mother.
