Prince Williams comments that it is "very alien" to see a war in Europe while it was normal to witness the conflict in Asia and Africa has invited a backlash on social media.

The comments, which he made as he visited Ukrainian Cultural Centre to extend support to the country, have been termed racist and tone-deaf.

While on the visit with his wife Catherine, the Duke of Cambridge, said Britain and the rest of Europe were united behind them.

However, he landed in a controversy saying that, it was "very alien" to see this (referring to the war in Ukraine) in Europe.

"Everyone is horrified by what they are seeing. Its really horrifying," the 39-year-old Duke said.

"The news every day, its just, its almost unfathomable. For our generation, its very alien to see this in Europe. Were all right behind you. Were thinking about you. We feel so useless", he added.

ITV royal reporter Lizzie Robinson tweeted footage of the complete quote on Thursday, March 10, hours after a shortened version of Williams quote made the rounds online.

Many news organizations had reported that William said its very alien to see this in Europe, since the British are more used to seeing conflict in Africa and Asia, per a Press Association staffer.

The misattributed quote quickly came under fire via social media, sparking accusations of racism.

His remarks invited backlash as people termed the comments ignorant and racist. While some reminded him about the scores of wars that happened in Europe over the years, many shared images of his own mother, Princess Diana, visiting Bosnia after the war.
