The supermarket chain said the price of the deal, which typically includes a sandwich, a snack and a soft drink, will go up from October 24.The price of the meal deal will rise from £3 to £3.40 for members of their Clubcard loyalty scheme, and from £3.50 to £3.90 for non Clubcard customers. The new prices will see the meal deal cost even rise for Tesco Clubcard members and but still saving them some and raising the price for other customers.More than 70% of meal deals are purchased by customers with a Clubcard membership, stats say.
The increase comes following an update in official data from the Office for National Statistics showed that food and drink inflation jumped to 14.5% last month – the highest since 1980.
The cost of food production has jumped in the face of the war in Ukraine, which has sparked higher grain, oil and energy prices, as well as weakness in the pound. In February, Tesco originally upped the price of its meal deal from £3 to, but only to £3.50 for non-Clubcard members, the latest rise marks the first time the popular lunch choice has gone over £3 for all customers involved.
