Viral Somali Artist Behind TikTok Hit "I Love You More than My Life" Signs Release Deal with Universal Music

Viral artist, Nimco Happy, who is best known for her TikTok hit "Isii Nafta" (Give Me Life), has signed a distribution deal with Polydor Records; a division of Universal Music.

After a TikTok was uploaded of Nimco singing the Somali wedding song in June 2017, the song went viral on TikTok. Many users jumped on the trend and included the song as background music. She performed the song for a broadcast show for Eid on Kenya-based Somali channel RTV.

Isii Nafta was a hit 2 years ago in East Africa because of its hook where Nimco sings "I love you" in four languages: Somali, English, Arabic and Swahili. This spawned a meme where people claim they can say "I love you" in different languages.

More people have been streaming the song on YouTube and via unauthorised Spotify uploads. These unofficial uploads have received more than 500,000 listens. The official version of "Isii Nafta" was uploaded on streaming platforms this week following Nimco's signing to Polydor Records. Her team are removing the unofficial versions of her viral hit.

Nimco found out two and a half weeks ago that her song had become a massive hit after she was tracked down by a Polydor Records representative.

Speaking about her success, she said: "Wallahi, I felt happy, elated. I can't describe it in words, but I felt overjoyed. I felt like the world had finally recognised me. That I'm known internationally."

She feels immense pride in being an internationally well known Somali singer. "I am so happy to be here and have gotten so far. That I can be here with a Somali name, with my Somalinimo."
