ARE PRENUPS BECOMING A MARITAL NORM?

A prenuptial arrangement, or as we know it in pop culture, a prenup, is a legal agreement in which one or both spouses agree to maintain ownership of their assets should the marriage end.

The prenup has become a subject of controversy, with many people standing ten toes down in its defence, dubbing it a sensible way to marry.

On the other hand, people argue that prenups invalidate the core values of marriage, such as trust and unconditional love.

UK rapper and baby product entrepreneur, Krept (of rap duo Krept & Konan) appeared to speak favourably of prenuptial agreements.

During his appearance on Love Island finalist Whitney Adebayo’s talk show, when asked if he would consider getting a prenup, he answered: “I would hope so!”

This response came to Whitney’s surprise, who repeatedly asked “You want a prenup?!”, whereas Krept seemed flabbergasted that this was not the obvious answer to her.

Krept continued, stating a prenup “should be standard” when entering into a marriage.

He then said: “Imagine you've worked so hard your whole life for something, you meet someone and that's great, but you met them a year ago, you get married one year and it just doesn't work out. They're entitled to half of your stuff.”

However, the rapper was asked: “Would you still want a prenup if your partner earned the same or made more money than you?”

To which Krept responded, without an ounce of hesitation: “No. Because I have nothing to worry about”, as Whitney erupted into laughter.

He continues: “If two people are both doing well, then there's nothing to be afraid of.”

Now, in Krept’s defence, he is earning more than the average Brit, having worked very hard for his money, and it is no secret that celebrities and those with more money are the perfect targets for gold digging. Therefore it is completely understandable that those lucky enough to make a good living may be cautious of people with ill intentions using them for their money.

Although a prenuptial agreement may make sense for some people, no aspect of marriage is “one size fits all”.

If a prenup works for you, fantastic. And if you're one to jump head first into marriage without a parachute hoping for success, that's just as amazing. So long as your love is true.
