Afrobeats artist Fireboy DML made an interesting revelation during his Amazon Music interview. The singer of "Peru" claimed that he doesn't necessarily make Afrobeats music, despite the interview itself being about how Afrobeats impacts the music industry.
The Nigerian-born artist also opened up about his school days, even admitting to writing love letters to his childhood crushes.
Fireboy took the world by storm when he released his debut album, Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps, in 2019. Since then, he has been providing us with feel-good summer music to vibe to.
His hit 2021 song "Peru" is currently his most popular, with over 3 million streams on Spotify.
The song wasn't just a hit with the younger generation but also resonated with the older generation. One lucky fan was even allowed to meet Fireboy himself after he was seen singing along gleefully to the hit song at Wireless Festival.
During his interview, Fireboy went on to discuss his childhood and how it brought him to singing and writing, mentioning that he had always been a writer and used to send love letters to his crushes. He also mentioned that he always knew he had a decent singing voice and would sneak off with his friends to sing with them as they accompanied him on guitar and other instruments.
When asked how he incorporates traditional African music elements into his music, Fireboy then said that it isn't something he had done intentionally, stating, "I just sort of combine stuff. I like to make different kinds of music."
He continued: "I just sort of combine stuff. I like to make different kinds of music," said Fireboy.
The "Bandana" artist also said he likes to experiment with Pop and RnB music, with a touch of Yoruba influences woven into it.
Interestingly, Fireboy's debut album has been labeled under the genre of RnB, which does indeed align with his statement claiming his music doesn't necessarily fall under the umbrella of Afrobeats.
