GREECE BECOMES FIRST ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN COUNTRY TO LEGALISE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

Greece has recently achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first country with a Christian Orthodox majority to legalize same-sex marriage. The historic decision, passed with a 176-76 majority vote in parliament on Thursday, extends the legal rights of same-sex couples, permitting them to adopt children as well.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized that this new legislation takes a bold step in eliminating a significant inequality. However, the move has sparked division within the nation, particularly with strong opposition from the influential Orthodox Church, which led to a protest rally in Athens.

Demonstrators displayed banners, held crosses, recited prayers, and sang biblical passages at Syntagma Square in the capital.

Archbishop Ieronymos, the head of the Orthodox Church, expressed concerns that the measure could "corrupt the homeland's social cohesion."

The bill required a simple majority to pass through the 300-member parliament, with Mitsotakis advocating for its approval and seeking support from opposition parties due to opposition within his own center-right governing party.

During the parliamentary debate preceding the vote, Mitsotakis emphasized the positive impact of the reform on the lives of previously overlooked individuals. He stated, "People who have been invisible will finally be made visible around us, and with them, many children will finally find their rightful place."

Despite internal opposition, the prime minister highlighted the inclusive nature of the legislation, asserting that the reform enhances the lives of citizens without diminishing the experiences of others.

LGBTQ organizations in Greece have welcomed the decision, considering it a historic moment for the nation.

Stella Belia, the head of the Rainbow Families group representing same-sex parents, expressed joy, stating, "This is a day of joy."

This development places Greece among the European countries that have embraced same-sex marriage, with 15 of the European Union's 27 members having already legalized it.

While 35 countries worldwide permit same-sex marriage, Greece's progress in this regard has been somewhat delayed compared to some of its European counterparts, primarily due to opposition from the Orthodox Church. Now, Greece has now become the first country in south-eastern Europe to achieve marriage equality.
