Four years on, OG UK rapper Chip has given insight into his iconic rap beef with grime trailblazer, Stormzy. Although Chip claims he initially had no qualms with the Blinded By Your Grace singer, he believes things took a turn when Chip sent Stormzy a playful diss track for him to hop on.
In his GRM Daily interview, Chip addressed his best-known rap feuds with his fellow UK rap peers, however, his 2020 beef with Shut Up rapper Stormzy seemed to have a particularly unique story.
Chip discussed his feature on Skepta and Young Adz's track 'Waze', and how fans became excited over the speculation that Chip's verse could be a shot aimed at Stormzy.
Although Chip claims that his lyrics were made purely in the spirit of rap jest and not aimed towards any particular individual, fans wouldn't help but point out key identifiers that could link to Stormzy.
For example, Chip states that an unspecified rapper isn't a "king", which many believed to be a reference to his song Crown and his Heavy is The Head album artwork, which depicts Stormzy wearing a crown.
As well as coming for an unspecified artist's awards and accolades, Chip also jabbed at the rapper's Christian faith, which led fans to believe this was a reference to Stormzy's faith anthem, Blinded By Your Grace.
Although Chip denies starting the feud, he suggested that Stomzy may have subliminally sent for him in some of his past lyrics, referencing Chip's signature chain necklaces.
Things became heated after Chip saw an opportunity for some friendly competition and suggested that he and Stormzy team up to orchestrate a playful rap feud. However, Stormzy was less than impressed by Chip's reference track for the suggestion, apparently taking offence to Chip's bars.
Stormzy allegedly responded by telling Chip that he would defeat him "lyrically, physically, and spiritually" which understandably escalated the tension.
The beef escalated further after Stormzy pulled up to Chip's home with his crew, causing Chip to "switch locations" over fears for his safety.
Chip then pulled up to Stormzy's favourite petrol station to make the music video for Flowers, a diss song made for Stormzy himself.
Fans also believe that Stormzy retaliated on his feature on Tion Wayne's track, 'I Dunno'.
Four years on, it is unclear as to where the two rappers stand with one another, however, Chip definitely kept it cute in his interview and made it clear that he has retired from the messy rap game.
